It has been a jam -packed year! Turning Around America had a wonderful summer teaching from the Sanctuary trailer on the East coast. We fulfilled our goal, of teaching children and adults animation, woodworking, bookmaking and printmaking. I am finally home after 8 months away, five months teaching Woodturning to wonderful students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and 3 months teaching at The Woodturning Intensive at The Center For Furniture Craftsmanship. Jenn has been teaching digital design and Installation classes at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell along with several photography workshops.
Jenn also used Sanctuary as a self-sustainable studio while working to complete her new photo and video project titled, Pools. It has been a significant year for both of us as individual artists, Jenn has a one woman show at Cynthia Reeves new gallery in Walpole, New Hampshire and inclusion of drawing work at the AMP gallery in Provincetown in the Fall. For me, a great year included being nominated for the Maude Morgan award at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I am currently in a show with Kim Winkle, of my new instruments at The Appalachian Center For Crafts in Smithville Tennessee.
After much discussion, We and I have decided to separate our projects. Jenn will go into exploring sustainability and art, photography and drawing. I will stay with the theme of empowerment through hand making and continue on as Turning Around America. The hurtles that we face is that our mobile classroom, Sanctuary, needs two strong sets of arms to hitch and unhitch. So we have decided it makes sense to sell Sanctuary and use the money toward our new projects. We would love Sanctuary to continue as a mobile classroom and will look for an art program or school to sell it to. If you know of a situation that the mobile classroom Sanctuary would fit with please let us know.
I am currently working on a project making musical instruments and am developing a program of teaching what I have learned. I will be testing it out this summer at Peters Valley Craft Center, teaching a sculptural guitar class with Peter Park, July 24th to the 28th , and at The Center For Furniture Craftsmanship ,Ukulele weekend event , August 22, and 23.
Stay tuned for more announcements.
