MARCH 16, 2012

Last Sunday I went to The Carpenters boat school with Karen (a Fellow at the Center) she is a boat builder, and Monica (one of my students). Karen’s husband Walter is a boat designer. We went to see their personal boat in a yard in Damariscotta first, and then to the school. The Carpenters Boat School is a fascinating place. The students are from all walks of life, the common factor that draws them to Maine is that something in their lives have caused them to be in transition, they live communally and make boats, canoes, chairs and a variety of interesting projects. The shop is a big beautiful three-story barn. Karen and Walter volunteer there so we got a tour of the whole campus.
